Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge – California

Images of Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge – Central California, taken in May 2019.

Created in 1985 to protect the habitat of the California Condor, Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge is off limits to visitors except for the roads that run through the park.

Since this refuge is just a few miles south of Corrizo Plains National Monument I made it a point to visit in hopes of catching a glimpse of the endangered condors. I slowly drove through the park twice, once in the morning and once in the early evening but had no luck. I did see a coyote, a few quail and a lot of ground squirrels but again, no condors.

I did have one interesting animal encounter while in Klipstein Canyon where I stopped to get a picture of some California Poppies, as I approached I noticed something moving below the area I was focused on; I looked in the hole where I saw the movement and it was a large Wolf Spider which are known to take over dens created by other animals. After I got my flower shot I backed away and the spider came back out of the hole and I was able to get some good images. Now this guy was about three inches of hairy body and legs and I normally don’t want anything to do with these things but I am on a wildlife refuge and they are wildlife…
