ASARCO Copper Mine – Arizona

Located 18 miles south of Tucson Arizona, the ASARCO Copper Mine Mission Complex has been in operation since 1960. The current pit is 2.5 miles long by 1.5 miles wide, 1,200 feet deep and employs approximately 684 people.

Having lived in the Tucson area on and off since my family moved here in 1969, I have never found the time to explore any of the regions copper mines. Since I completed my trip planning for the months ahead I made it a point to do so during my winter “down time”. The ASARCO mine tour is an inexpensive ($10) and interesting look into one of the largest copper mines in Arizona; a state that produces 60% of the total copper mined in the United States.
