Cedar Breaks National Monument – Utah

Carved in the side of the 10,000 foot high Markagunt Plateau is an over 2000 foot deep and three mile wide gorge filled with eroded columns and rock formations. This Amphitheater is the centerpiece of Cedar Breaks National Monument.

This is a relatively small park where the road weaves its way along the Amphitheater rim. There are several trails that follow the rim but on this day one of the most outstanding was closed because of mud and snow. So instead I took off down one of the “simpler” trails, the Alpine Pond Trail. This loop trail is only two miles long and relatively level with just a few areas with any kind of incline but for some reason it still had me breathing heavily. Perhaps it was because this hike was taking place at over 10,000 feet. Rarely do I find myself in this situation; I had my bottle of water but could’ve used a bottle of oxygen too!
