Pompeys Pillar National Monument – Montana

Images of Pompeys Pillar National Monument – Southern Montana, taken in June 2018.

Pompeys Pillar National Monument is one of the few Bureau of Land Management (BLM) parks that are developed; this one is compete with a Visitor Center, pathways, stairways and viewing decks. The park was created primarily to preserve and protect the signature in sandstone of Captain William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition. On July 25 1806, when he carved his signature in stone, he was making his way back east to meet up with Meriwether Lewis’s half of their party. After traveling to the west coast they had broken their expedition in two to better explore and map the area.

The sandstone formation that bares Clark’s signature was named by him as a tribute to the son of his Indian Guide Sacajawea.
