In 1960 the VIII Olympic Winter Games were held in Squaw Valley California and the small village on the northwest side of Lake Tahoe played host to the world. The games were officially declared open by President Richard Nixon; featured an outdoor speed skating rink and was distinguished by the fact that it was the first time computers were used to tabulate results. The highlight of the games was the US Hockey team’s victory over team Russia and its subsequent Gold Medal win over Czechoslovakia.

There were many more landmarks from the 1960 games when I was here in 1975 on a post-high school graduation trip. Today only a few buildings and landmarks remain. Of course this is still a popular ski resort area and during the summer months attacks tourists to its shopping and meadow resorts. On this day the Art Wine Music Festival was in full swing featuring local winery’s offering samples and bands playing throughout the complex.
