Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site – California

Images of Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site – Northern California, taken in July 2018.

Winner of no less than four Pulitzer Prizes for Drama and the 1936 Nobel Prize in Literature, Eugene O’Neill was one of the most celebrated playwrights of the twentieth century. His characters were individuals on the edge of society and his plays dealt primarily with tragedy.

The Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site preserves the Tao House, the home that O’Neill shared with his wife Carlotta, and where he wrote some of his most famous plays including ‘The Iceman Cometh’ (1940) and ‘Long Day’s Journey into Night (1941).

“It’s the No Chance Saloon…Bedrock Bar, the End of the Line Café…Don’t you notice the beautiful calm in the atmosphere? That’s because it’s the last harbor. No one here has to worry about where they’re going next, because there is no farther they can go.” - Larry Slade from the play The Iceman Cometh
