Korbel Champagne Cellars – California

The Korbel brothers came to America and built several businesses, their champagne venture the most enduring as it is the twelfth largest in the country today producing over 1.3 million cases per year.

Korbel Champagne is produced using the methode champenoise process where the champagne is fermented (secondary fermentation) inside the same bottle from which it is served. The company has used this process since its founding in 1882.

I took the Korbel Winery tour with my friend Beth from Atlanta and we enjoyed the museum almost as much as the free champagne tasting. Along with interesting history of the company we learned that the 1960’s TV show Combat, starring Vic Morrow, was filmed at the winery using the buildings and more importantly the surrounding fields where the deal was that the film crew would blow up the redwood stumps that otherwise couldn’t be removed and were therefore taking up space in the grape fields.
