California Highway 1 – Monterey to Big Sur – California

After taking the 17 Mile Drive through Pebble Beach in Monterey I headed south on California Highway 1, the Pacific Coast Highway, towards Big Sur. This is an area that was enveloped in fog when I was here in 2006, and although my light was fading I decided that I needed to head down the coast to see what I could. My goal was to get to Big Sur but it was the coastline that I wanted to see and the road itself featuring several bridges built in the 1930’s that are unto themselves works of art. The Bixby Bridge and the Rocky Creek Bridges are reinforced concrete open-spandrel arch bridges that host CA 1 and look out into the Pacific. Because of their positioning they are some of the most photographed bridges in California, with the exception of the Golden Gate of course… Also on my list were several pockets of Redwoods along the highway; I never get tired of seeing those magnificent trees no matter where they are.
