Once part of Yosemite National Park; Devils Postpile was removed as part of the park when mining interest convinced the government to allow them to dynamite the formation to allow the construction of a dam. Federal protection of the 60 foot high volcanic basalt formation was restored in 1911 and Devils Postpile National Monument was created.
