Titan Missile National Historical Landmark – Arizona

Approximately 25 miles south of Tucson Arizona sits the only remaining Titan II ICBM site open to the public, the Titan Missile National Historical Landmark. Once part of a missile defense program that included 54 complexes across the United States, each of which capable of delivering a nine megaton thermonuclear warhead to a target more than 6000 miles away in less than 30 minutes, it is now a museum to the Cold War between the US and Soviet Union.

Between 1963 and 1987 Complex 571-7 remained on alert, ready to launch in just 58 seconds if so ordered by the President of the United States. It was part of the larger military strategy of Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) where the US and USSR, each possessing enough weapons of mass destruction to annihilate the world, used the threat as a deterrent to war.

Greetings. I grew up west of Tucson, and my school bus drove right by silo #570-4 (southwest of Marana, AZ) every day. When I was a USAF ROTC cadet at the University of Arizona, we took a field trip to Silo #570-9 (north of Tucson), that was still on alert. It was super-interesting. Many years later, a friend who's a Pharmacist purchased one of the launch sites, and built his home over the top of the Control Center entrance. How awesome is that? This is a moving place to visit, as I did a few years back. I attended the Univ. of Arizona in the 1960s when these missiles were on alert. It is interesting & sobering to get to visit here now.
