Images of Oregon Caves National Monument – Southern Oregon, taken in April 2017.
Entering the cave at Oregon Caves National Monument is special; you are walking on a blue grate pathway and below you is the River Styx…is this the mythical boundary between Earth and the Underworld? Well if it is it’s a lot colder and a lot wetter than the myth would have you believe! This is without a doubt the wettest cave I’ve ever been in, granted it’s spring and the snowpack in these mountains is melting but I’m being rained on underground! Of course that is a good sign for the cave because it means it is still “living” and growing but for me…well I wish I would’ve brought an umbrella.
Beyond my discomfort the cave itself was very interesting with many ornate rooms and interesting stories; from how it was discovered to how those that followed broke off formations to take as souvenirs and oddly enough that the View-Master company was created at Oregon Caves during a chance meeting by the inventor William Gruber and Harold Graves a picture postcard maker. The Chateau where they met is itself a National Historic Landmark and this remote mountain is part of a larger national forest protecting plants and animals of southern Oregon and northern California.
