Newberry National Volcanic Monument – Lava Lands – Oregon (2017)

Newberry National Volcanic Monument, just south of Bend Oregon, is run by the Forest Service and was closed “For the Season”. Luckily I could still access the Trail of the Molten Land which runs through the Lava Butte Lava Flow. It’s a very interesting trail with great views of Lava Butte and the Cascades Mountain Range to the west.

Newberry is the largest volcano in Oregon, a shield shaped composite volcano which is wider than it is tall. It is also the site where in the 1960’s NASA astronauts came to train for their moon missions.
