John Day Fossil Beds National Monument – Oregon

John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is split into 3 units; Sheep Rock, Painted Hills and Clarno. Eastern Oregon and these three areas in particular, represent some of the richest fossil beds on earth. Research continues in this park although the public is not allowed in any of those areas. Regardless, there are areas where a visitor can see fossilized remains along trails as well as at the visitor center.

The park’s units are a long way apart so it took me two days to visit all three. They are each interesting in their own right and all three are incredibly scenic. Sheep Rock, where the Visitor Center is located, had several clay badlands areas to explore while Painted Hills exhibited colorful banded hills. The Clarno Unit had trails along which you could actually view fossils and a striking area of rock formations called the Palisades. This park could be characterized as one of the “out-of-the-way” parks that are generally lightly visited but there is plenty to see here among the beautiful rolling hills and mountains of eastern Oregon.
