Columbia River Gorge – Oregon

The Columbia River Gorge is an incredibly scenic section along the Columbia River stretching from Troutdale to The Dalles in northern Oregon. To narrow it down a bit, the “most” incredible section is a 25 mile stretch that contains seven waterfalls and gorge and river views, most of which can be seen from just off of Interstate 84 which runs along the Columbia River. In order to get direct access to view all of the sites up close and adequately explore the area you have to get off of the interstate and on to Historic US Highway 30.

Normally I am not a huge waterfalls guy. Once you’ve seen Yosemite Falls, Yellowstone Falls and Niagara Falls the others look small and normal in comparison but this area is special. Perhaps this is partially due to the fact that all of the falls are so close to the road and easily accessible; little effort is required to take in the view…in some cases you don’t even have to get out of your car! But there is more to it than that because these falls on the whole are interesting to look at; from the world famous upper and lower Multnomah Falls with its Benson Bridge to Horsetail Falls which is aptly named because, well, it really looks like a flowing horsetail.

Along with all the falls there is the powerful Columbia River and the steep and dramatic cliffs that frame it but the falls are the stars here!
