Scotts Bluff National Monument – Nebraska

Early settlers migrating westward on the Oregon Trail passed through Mitchell Pass in what is now Scotts Bluff National Monument. The bluff, along with Chimney Rock to the east, was a landmark for the travelers that indicated that they were approaching the western lands which were their destination.

The park is not large but it is dominated by the bluff as well as some surrounding prairies and badlands. There is a road to the summit which boasts the only three tunnels in Nebraska as it cuts through Eagle Rock to get to the top of the bluff and although I did drive up there I also made it a priority to hike up the 1.6 mile Saddle Rock Trail. That provided me the best views of the park and gave me an opportunity to go through a fourth tunnel; the trail tunnel that passed through Saddle Rock itself.
