Pipestone National Monument – Minnesota

Images of Pipestone National Monument – Southwestern Minnesota, taken in August 2017.

Pipestone National Monument protects the stone quarries where American Indians continue to quarry the soft Pipestone (catlinite) in the traditional ways of their ancestors.

This small monument in southwestern Minnesota is a peaceful area in a Tallgrass Prairie with a beautiful lake and an unexpectedly powerful waterfall. Along the Quartzite Cliffs, which stand on top of the Pipestone vein, there are a number of interesting rock formations and historical markings. For over 2000 years the Pipestone quarried here has been used by tribes like the Sioux, Crow, Blackfoot and Pawnee to make ceremonial pipes and figures.
