Effigy Mounds National Monument – Iowa

With panoramic views of the Mississippi River Effigy Mounds National Monument was established in 1949 to protect the unique mounds created by the American Indians as far back as as 1400 years ago. These effigy mounds were often built in the shapes of animals, such as bears and birds, and were probably used in religious and other ceremonial gatherings.

I visited the area during the solar eclipse and went to the park to watch the event with rangers and other visitors. The overcast skies cleared long enough to get a great view of the 87% coverage of the sun by the moon. A small local newspaper had sent a reporter to cover the event locally and I was among the individuals that he interviewed. Having been in the paper in La Grande Oregon earlier this year when my RV burnt down, it is clear that I am well on my way to becoming a celebrity and it’s only a matter of time before I burst onto the national and perhaps international scene!
