Redwood National Park – California

Along the west coast of the US, in small pockets with the perfect environment, the world’s tallest trees have stood for thousands of years. These pockets of endangered trees are now thriving and in 1994 to better protect the magnificent redwood trees and their environment, Redwood National Park was expanded to incorporate three California Redwoods State Parks; Prairie Creek, Del Norte Coast and Jedediah Smith.

No matter how much time I spend in this area I never tire of walking among the redwoods, they are truly spectacular. A redwood can live up to 2000 years and grow to over 380 feet tall. It’s one thing to crane your neck skyward in an attempt to see the top of these trees but it’s another to comprehend their size at eye level where they can grow up to 22 feet in diameter. The brain, knowing what “normal” trees look like, struggles to grasp the reality placed before it. You’re dwarfed by your surroundings and in a semi dark environment because the canopy above blocks out most of the sunlight. It is a foreign experience yet an awe inspiring one…
