Muir Woods National Monument – California (2017)

The redwoods now protected in Muir Woods National Monument once covered much of the northern hemisphere. Today they only can be seen in canyons along the Pacific coast of California and Oregon. They are the tallest living things on earth and can grow to over 379 feet yet their root system is no more than 10 to 12 feet below the surface of the ground…spread out as far as 100 feet in all directions. Most mature trees are 500 to 800 years old but they can grow as old as 2000 years old.

It’s easy to feel small when walking among these majestic trees but you also feel a sense of awe for something that has managed to survive the test of time in a fast paced and changing environment. The key is the pockets of cool, damp canyons where they thrive and individuals like John Muir who fought to preserve them in the face of unrestricted logging in the early 1900’s.

Amazing to walk among them, difficult to photograph them! I looked for ways to portray the height and sheer size of these giants which is tough in the close quarters of a forest filled with these trees. There are some images that may give you some perspective but until you stand under a redwood you can’t imagine their size. So next time you stand next to a 37 story building imagine what it would be like to see a tree that tall…
