2017 Chiricahua National Monument – Arizona

I visited Chiricahua National Monument several years ago only to find out when I arrived that the park road was closed for repaving. So from the Visitor Center my only option was to hike into the park and to the Heart of Rocks Loop. That was a seven mile hike with just under a 900 foot elevation gain and since it was February there was still snow and ice on some of the trail; but the formations and views were spectacular!

Still, I had the yearning to see what I had missed and made it a point to return to the park on the way back to Tucson for the winter months. This time I drove the park road and hiked a loop of trails through Echo Canyon; and I was not disappointed. The area is an incredible collection of balanced rock and pinnacle formations. Everywhere you look there is something unique. So revisiting this park was well worth the effort, it’s in the middle of nowhere, and between my two visits I was able to rock this rocky park!
