Guadalupe Mountains National Park - Texas

Guadalupe Mountains National Park is a portion of a marine fossil reef that formed over 250 million years ago. The section of the reef that rises above the Chihuahuan Desert today includes the highlands and the tallest mountain in Texas, Guadalupe Peak at 8751 feet, as well as numerous canyons that act as a transition zone between the two.

I hiked into the Pine Spring Canyon along the Devil’s Hall Trail and to a lesser extent around the McKittrick Canyon area but one of my favorite views of the Guadalupe escarpment was from the west over the Salt Basin Dunes. This field of gypsum boasts dunes that are over 60 feet high and although I did not see any animal life the tracks and trails in the sand made it clear that the area was teaming with creatures of all kinds. It was also interesting to see how the plant life grew through the sand and conversely how the shifting sands at times consumed some of the plants. The view of the Guadalupe Mountains, the evidence of animal life, the struggle of the plants along with the wind patterns in the sand made this an incredibly interesting stop while in the park.
