Blue Elbow Swamp – Texas

After ending my 2016 travels in Hilton Head South Carolina I set out on a six day drive back to my home base in Tucson Arizona. Admittedly this is just poor planning as spending six straight seven to eight hour days driving a 40-foot RV pulling a car is no fun. Lesson learned; from now on I will plan my trips so that I meander my way back home instead of submitting myself to a forced march across the country!

But there was an unexpected silver lining of sorts, even if it was a very small part of my trip. Upon crossing the border from Louisiana into Texas I decided to pull into the Texas welcome center rest stop just to get out and walk around a little. Now if you’ve spent any time at all driving our interstate highway system you know that these state welcome centers are the cream of the rest stops and there just might be something special when you pull in. Usually it is a free cup of coffee or, as it was Florida; a free glass of orange juice. So now I’m in Texas so it better be something big! Well they weren’t giving anything away here but there was something special; out the back of the building was a boardwalk into the Blue Elbow Swamp. I went back to my vehicle, grabbed my camera and took off down the path. It was quiet and peaceful, no one else was out there, and a great way to decompress after hours of driving. You never know what you might find in a swamp and I was able to capture some wildlife shots…along with a much needed break from my white line fever!
