Capulin Volcano National Monument – New Mexico

Capulin Volcano National Monument protects the cinder cone of a volcano that erupted 60,000 years ago on the Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field.

This volcanic cone is unique because of an early settler that preserved the area and built a road to the summit allowing visitors the ability to easily access the crater rim and vent. I hiked the one-mile Crater Rim Trail for views of the surrounding area to include the lava flows as well as other volcanic formations; and the Crater Vent Trail to get a close-up of the plugged vent of the Capulin Volcano.
