Fort Pike State Historic Site – Louisiana

Fort Pike, named for the explorer and soldier General Zebulon Montgomery Pike, was completed in 1826 as one of three forts built to protect New Orleans from attack.

The fort was overrun by the Louisiana State militia in 1861 and held for the Confederacy until it was abandoned after Union forces retook New Orleans in 1862. The fort was decommissioned in 1890 and is currently maintained as Fort Pike State Historic Site.
