On December 7, 1941 at 7:55 a.m. the Pearl Harbor Naval Base, Hawai’i was attacked by the Japanese air force thrusting the United States into World War II. Today the memorial of that day rests in Pearl Harbor at the World War II Valor In The Pacific National Monument. Included are the memorials for three battleships, the USS Arizona, Oklahoma and Utah. Most notably the USS Arizona Memorial straddles the battleship where it sank on that day in 1941 and is the resting place for 900 of the 1177 seamen that perished there. It is, of course, a somber place of reflection and allows the visitor to view the battleship, some of which protrudes above the water.

Docked nearby is the USS Bowfin, a Balao class submarine that was put into service in 1942 and the Battleship USS Missouri where on September 2, 1945, while docked in Tokyo Bay, the Japanese Surrendered to the Allied forces ending World War II.
