National Key Deer Refuge - Florida

Images of National Key Deer Refuge – Big Pine Key Florida, taken in October 2016.

Established in 1957 the National Key Deer Refuge was created to protect the endangered Key Deer on Big Pine Key. Key Deer, with noticeably shorter legs, are the smallest subspecies of white-tailed deer in North America.

I had seen several Key Deer while driving through Big Pine Key at night so I visited the refuge one day in hopes of catching a photograph of one of these unique animals. As it turns out I caught a glimpse of one while passing an abandoned building and quickly hopped out of the car in hopes of getting a picture. I slowly made my way around to the back of the building where I found a buck and took a few quick shots before he moved out of view. Going back to the front of the building I waited to see if he would reappear. Instead a small female emerged to cross the road allowing me to get a shot surpassing my expectations for the day.
