Canyons of the Ancients National Monument - Colorado

Canyon of the Ancients National Monument is a relatively new park and largely undeveloped. There are over 1000 identified and recorded archeological sites in the monument and many more awaiting study.

One of the accessible sites, Painted Hand Pueblo, is a small village of about 20 rooms with the centerpiece being a freestanding tower perched on a boulder. This area was developed in the AD 1200s.

Another of the developed and protected sites is Lowry Pueblo. This site is particularly interesting because of the interior rooms that survived through the years (and are now covered by a large roof structure) as well as a large Great Kiva.
