2016 Chiricahua National Monument – Arizona

Chiricahua National Monument, the result of weathering and erosion on the site of a 27 million year old volcano, is a fascinating parade of towers, balanced rocks and spires.

The eight mile park road was completely closed for repair which was disappointing especially since I had talked myself out of doing a long hike on this day opting instead for a leisurely drive along the aforementioned park road. That meant that all I had with me was a sandwich and three bottles of water but nothing to carry it all with on a long hike. Wanting to see the park I took off down the trail with everything unceremoniously stuffed in my pockets. Just over seven miles later I made it back to my car thirsty because the three bottles of water were just not enough! I vowed, for the second time in the last month, never again to go into a park without my backpack…and this time I mean it! Nonetheless this trip and the hike were definitely worth the effort, and dehydration, as the views were spectacular. It takes some time to get to but I would highly recommend going to the Heart of Rocks Loop, just take plenty of water…
