Katmai National Park – Alaska

Images of Katmai National Park – Southern Alaska, taken in July 2015.

My last stop on my Alaskan National Park adventure was in Katmai National Park on the Alaska Peninsula. Known primarily for its wildlife the park is also the site of no less than 15 active volcanos, the last of which erupted in 1912. That eruption site is known today as the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, an area of desolation which I was able to view and hike through.

But it is the wildlife that the park is known for, particularly the spawning of salmon each year which in turn leads to the bear feeding frenzy that can be easily viewed at Brooks Falls. It is an amazing site to see, large numbers of Brown Bears catching and eating fish to bulk themselves up for the long winter ahead. This is what the masses come to see and those that do are richly rewarded!
