Juneau and Mendenhall Glacier - Alaska

My first stop in Alaska was the capitol city of Juneau. With a population of approximately 31,000, it is the third largest city in Alaska behind Anchorage and Fairbanks (2010 census numbers). It seems even smaller than the numbers indicate and is dominated by shops, mostly souvenir and jewelry stores, which cater to the tourists that arrive daily on the massive cruise ships that move up and down the coast of Alaska.

Before embarking on my National Park adventure I was able to “warm up” by visiting Mendenhall Glacier in the Tongass National Forest. A 15 minute ride from downtown Juneau it gave me my first up-close look at an Alaskan glacier and increased my level of anticipation of what was to come over the next 30 days.
