Cuyahoga Valley National Park – Beaver Marsh – Ohio

Near the southern entrance to Cuyahoga Valley National Park lies Beaver Marsh, an area teaming with plants and animals living in a pristine environment that was a joy to settle in and watch. Amazing as it may seem, this area had been a junk yard until it was cleaned up by the Sierra Club in 1984. Shortly thereafter beaver dammed and flooded the area to make it what it is today. I spent several hours one evening walking up and down the short boardwalk watching the wildlife. The next day I returned to take it all in again and this time I was lucky enough to see the flowers on the Lily Pads slowly opening to the early morning sunlight. Families of wood ducks, turtles, birds of all types and interesting plants are everywhere; however, it was the majestic Great Blue Herons that captured my attention the most. Seeing a 4 foot tall bird in a tree is one thing but to watch a bird with a 7 foot wingspan take flight is quite a treat!

Throughout the rest of the park there were numerous waterfalls, although water levels were down, and the story of the canals but this marsh was special.

Jerry, I grew up on the west side of Cleveland and don’t remember visiting this park! Most of my family are still there and I plan to visit them in October. I will make a point of visiting this park too. Thanks for the fabulous photos!
