This is a Slane [sleadgh] pron. slawn used for cutting turf . Was widely used up to the 60s and 70s by individual farmers who owned turf bogs .
turf cutting is now very regulated - unlike the banks - and the Govt . is very strict about people cutting turf for winter fuel !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
