Steve, this is an uncommon bird to see, anywhere. Of the three mergansers: common, red-breasted, and hooded it is definitely the rarest. Common and red-breasted are considered common to see in their range. However, if we are to see one here it should be from fall migration through spring migration. We are in the winter range area of these birds. Diving fish ducks with spiky beak and saw toothed mandibles. Not even listed under ducks in the index of the Peterson Field Guide but indentified with the afore mentioned description. Not a favorite for eating because of their fishy taste
