Trakai Island Castle

Our tour took us to the island castle in Trakai, the only such castle in Eastern Europe. The island is situated on Lake Galve, one of the deepest lakes in Lithuania, and is reachable by a short bridge. Trakai Island Castle was built in the 14th century as a residence for the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, and their banner still flies over the castle today. The castle was damaged and abandoned during the Russian invasion of 1655–1661, and was not rebuilt until 1951. In 1962, the castle became a part of the Trakai History Museum.
