There are three subfamilies: Large sphinx moths (Subfamily sphinginae) which have long, rounded wings that come to a point; Eyed sphinx moths (Subfamily smerinthinae) which have scalloped wings held away from the body; and small sphinx months (Subfamily macroglossinae) which have colourful scalloped wings or entirely transparent wings.
