Rundale Palace is a baroque palace originally built for the Dukes of Courland. The palace was built in two periods, from 1736 until 1740 and from 1764 until 1768. It was used as a hospital for Napoleon's army during the French invasion of Russia in 1812, then suffered serious damage in 1919 during the Latvian War of Independence. In 1920, parts Rundāle Palace were restored to accommodate a local school as well as flats for Latvian military veterans. It became a museum in 1963 where restoration work has been going on ever since.
