Meadowhawks are small skimmers (Family Libellulidae) found in open, grassy areas. Most of the adult males found in the Ottawa area are typically red, while females and immatures are yellow. Many have black markings along the side of the abdomen. Like many other skimmers, they feed by perching atop a flower or branch and waiting for prey to fly within their range. Once the prey is in reach, the meadowhawk will dart out to capture it.
