Hummingbird Clearwing moth caterpillar (Hemaris thysbe)

Kanata, Ontario

This large caterpillar was munching on my viburnum shrub. When I checked back a few hours later, he had disappeared. It wasn't until later, when doing research on the Hummingbird Clearwing moth, that I identified this mystery caterpillar. Larvae feed on hawthorn, honeysuckle, snowberry, and viburnum while the adult moths nectar on deep-throated flowers.....both of which I have in my backyard!
