Brown Mantidfly (Climaciella brunnea)

The Burnt Lands (Panmure)

These fascinating insects are found in old fields where flowers, particularly milkweeds, are abundant. They prey on other insects (including other Mantidflies), lying in wait on flowers for a likely meal to appear. Their forelegs are specially designed for this purpose; these mantid-like structures contain a single claw for capturing prey.
