Bee fly (Bombylius sp.)

Old Quarry Trail, Ottawa

There were lots of these tiny flying balls of fuzz on the trail today. They seemed to prefer grassy areas and absolutely refused to allow me to get close enough to take any macro photos. This one, however, was more cooperative and allowed me to take a few shots of her. These flies are harmless to humans...what looks like a stinger is its proboscis, which allows it to feed on the nectar of flowers.
