Black Swallowtail caterpillar

As part of my butterfly garden, I plant parsley as a larval foodplant for caterpillars, hoping to attract adult butterflies looking for a place to lay their
eggs. Although I never saw a Black Swallowtail in my yard, one must have stopped and visited, for I found this this beauty on the parsley late in the summer!

I found one of these caterpillars on my parsley in August 2008 too. I saw it every day for about two weeks and then it disappeared without a trace.
