Although this small fly bears a striking resemblance to a bee or wasp, it is harmless. It is named for its habit of hovering near flowers, its tiny wings moving so fast they seem invisible.
The larvae of many hoverfly species feast on aphids, and adults are major pollinators. As such, they are beneficial insects in both life stages.
