The Curonian Spit

The Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a unique sandy and wooded cultural landscape on a coastal spit featuring many rare. The Spit was formed by the sea, wind and human activity; it ranges from 0.4 km to 4 km in width and is 97 km long. The dunes and woodlands are home to many vulnerable species, and is a popular holiday spot in Lithuania. As it connects to mainland Europe at the Russian end, we had to ferry across to the spit from Klaipeda, Lithuania.

We got to the spit later than planned as high winds and rain meant the ferry - although it runs a very short distance - couldn't run. The winds at the observation deck were incredibly gusty, and the Baltic Sea appeared very turbulent.
