We stopped in at the famous Hill of Crosses on our way from Riga, Latvia to Klaipeda, Lithuania. Crosses were first placed there after failed uprisings in 1831 and 1863 against Russian authorities, to symbolize and remember the defeated rebels who were exiled to Russia or whose bodies were never recovered. It became a place of pilgrimage, with more crosses being placed there over time. During the Soviet occupation of 1944-1990, the Soviets bulldozed the site three separate times. However, after each time the number of crosses grew significantly, despite Soviet attempts to block the road and arrest anyone bringing crosses to the hill. Estimates place the number of crosses there at over 100,000.
