KLR 650 Alaska Mods

In preparation for my Alaska trip I am making a number of mods to my KLR650. I am planning to ride over 8500 miles, in anything from rain to snow to clouds of biting insects so more protection is a must. I had a Rifle Sport fairing on the shelf of my shop left over from my ZRX1200R that I found would work. Most of the brackets were provided in the kit, and with a few mods I had it mounted. You want the windshield to be at 50deg, so that is the angle I mounted it at. The headlight is the stock one with a modded headlight mount from JC Whitney. I needed to extend the mount to fit the headlight in the fairing so I rubber mounted the headlight at the same time. I also had the add on hand guards (elephant ears) that add a lot of protection, but you only want to use them in the cold and rain, because you do not get a lot of cooling breeze. I modded them so they are easy on/off rather than the stock mounting which requires you to unscrew one of the windshield mounts on each side. Rifle really knows how to make a fairing, I test rode the bike today and it is as quiet as the fairing/Rifle windshield combo on my Concours. I was doing 70 MPH (80 indicated) with my shield up on my helmet. Very quiet, no buffetting. I can notice no ill effects, the bike handles like always, but truck wakes are less of a problem.
I also am showing some pics of the aft luggage rack. The sides are aluminum, but the top is glass filled plastic. Going acrossed Labrador last year it started to flex and the bolts let go that hold the rack down. The Givi box was now free to pivot up and down on the side bolts. I took the rear rack apart and the fender, welded a channel over the rack mounts on the rear fender stay, made some aluminum spacers on the lathe, and added a doubler and tripler on the top of the rack. Now everything is bolted down metal to metal, not metal to plastic. I forsee no more problems.
