Winnetou was the indian chief in a couple of German story books from the late of the nineteenth century, who made a white man his brother and rode with him side by side. Because the story was so popular, since 1963, many countries, including Germany, France, USA etc worked together to put this story on the screen. There were totally three major films and several related films made, all were at that time sensational blockbusters.
But these movies were not really made in the western USA, but in former Yugoslavia, today Croatia.
In these films the glamorous landscape of Croatia can be seen, including a lot of the mountains, the Plitvice Lakes National Park, the Krke NP etc. This is one of the many reasons why Croatia attracts so many European visitors.
