580 Remington single shot .22 modified 35 years ago to make a quality target rifle light enough for kids to shoot offhand in smallbore silhouette competition. Shortened and re-crowned barrel, added Canjar trigger with set shoe, and built thumbhole stock out of balsa wood. The aluminum ram in the stock is actually a .25" thick beveled washer for the receiver bolt. The balsa wood requires a broad bearing surface or it will collapse when the bolt is tightened. Light as a feather and better than minute of angle accuracy. A lot of kids learned gun safety and accuracy with this rifle. I thought of removing the bumps and dings, but she has earned every one of them honestly. An amazingly successful project that continues to teach kids how to enjoy and respect firearms all of these years later.
