Gaucín is situated atop a mountain ridge some 20 miles from the Mediterranean coast. Gaucín's history dates back to the Phonecians, Romans, & the Moors who become it's keepers until the Reconquista of the 1490s. Neolithic man likely walks these ways as well. Gaucín's strategic location as the final stop in the mountains before winding down towards Gibraltar means that many battles have been fought here as the Moorish castle's ruins attest. The town has been attacked and razed on several occassions ( the last major attack is by the French circa 1710 ) but the residents always manage to survive and the town pops up like the flowers which are profligate around town.
Today, Gaucín is a white village tourist destination for folks venturing between Gibraltar & Ronda. This gallery is a work in progress where I add photos with each additional visit we make to Gaucín as we explore the mountains.
