Decorative glass paperweights first appeared in European glass studios in the late 1840s and were a popular item for the next two decades. After a long period of decline in production and popularity, a paperweight resurgence occurred beginning in the 1950s and extending to the present. Old French and Italian glass studios returned to paperweight production and were joined by new studios in Scotland and the United States.
