Sunday we took a ferry to Tiritiri Matinga Island. A 500+ acre island, Tiri was once a ranch that eventually destroyed the habitat. Rats overran the island preventing the envisioned recovery. Eventually, all mammals were eradicated and a successful plan was implemented to take the island back to its original condition. The island was reforested and rare and endemic species, mainly birds, were reintroduced. With the help of a very knowledgeable docent we were able to experience so many birds and plants. Truly a magical, spiritual island. We were fortunate.
